Frozen Olaf Inspired Hat Crochet Pattern

Frozen just wouldn't be Frozen without  the quirky yet lovable Olaf!

I feel that some of the best and most heartfelt quotes from the entire movie came from him.
Sure he wasn't most attractive, the smartest or the funniest snowman, but he was something far more important... He was loving! He understood the importance of love, and how some people are worth melting for!


What You'll Need
5.00mm Crochet Hook
4.00mm Crochet Hook
100g DK Yarn {8ply}
2 Black Buttons {1 inch x 1 inch}
Tapestry/Wool Needle
Scissors
Small Handful of Toy Stuffing

Finished Size
4 - 10 Years Old
{Head Circumference 19 inches, 48cm.}

Ash Grey
Burnt Orange

~ Note ~
{Chains at the start of a round count as the first Half Double Crochet of that round}

Round 1~ Taking your 5.00mm crochet hook and snow white DK yarn, start of by making a Slip Knot, then crochet 3 Chains. Crochet 7 Half Double Crochets into the first chain you made. Slip Stitch into the top of chain 3. You should have 8 half double crochets now.
Round 2~ Chain 2, then crochet a Half Double Crochet into the same stitch. Crochet 2 Half Double Crochets into every stitch all around. Slip Stitch into the top of chain 2. You should have 16 half double crochets now. 
Round 3~ Chain 2, then crochet a Half Double Crochet into the same stitch. *Crochet 1 Half Double Crochet into the next stitch. Then crochet 2 Half Double Crochets in the next stitch.  Repeat from the * all around. Slip Stitch into the top of chain 2. You should have 24 half double crochets now.
Round 4~ Chain 2, then crochet a Half Double Crochet into the same stitch. *Crochet 1 Half Double Crochet into the next 2 stitches. Then crochet 2 Half Double Crochets in the next stitch.  Repeat from the * all around. Slip Stitch into the top of chain 2. You should have 32 half double crochets now.
Round 5~ Chain 2, then crochet a Half Double Crochet into the same stitch. *Crochet 1 Half Double Crochet into the next 3 stitches. Then crochet 2 Half Double Crochets in the next stitch.  Repeat from the * all around. Slip Stitch into the top of chain 2. You should have 40 half double crochets now.
Round 6~ Chain 2, then crochet a Half Double Crochet into the same stitch. *Crochet 1 Half Double Crochet into the next 4 stitches. Then crochet 2 Half Double Crochets in the next stitch.  Repeat from the * all around. Slip Stitch into the top of chain 2. You should have 48 half double crochets now. 
Round 7~ Chain 2, then crochet a Half Double Crochet into the same stitch. *Crochet 1 Half Double Crochet into the next 5 stitches. Then crochet 2 Half Double Crochets in the next stitch.  Repeat from the * all around. Slip Stitch into the top of chain 2. You should have 56 half double crochets now.
Round 8~ Chain 2, then crochet a Half Double Crochet into the same stitch. *Crochet 1 Half Double Crochet into the next 6 stitches. Then crochet 2 Half Double Crochets in the next stitch.  Repeat from the * all around. Slip Stitch into the top of chain 2. You should have 64 half double crochets now.
Round 9 - 21~ Chain 2. Crochet 1 Half Double Crochet into every stitch all around. Slip Stitch into the top of chain 2.  
Fasten off, and weave in loose ends.


~ Ear Flaps ~

Right Ear-Flap
Start of by attaching your bulky yarn to the 9th stitch of Round 21.
Row 1~ Chain 2. Crochet 1 Half Double Crochet into the next 13 stitches. Turn work.
Row 2~ Repeat round 1.
Row 3~ Chain 1. Crochet 1 Half Double Crochet Decrease. Crochet 1 Half Double Crochet into the next 10 stitches. Then crochet 1 Half Double Crochet Decrease.
Row 4~ Chain 2. Crochet 1 Half Double Crochet into the next 11 stitches. 
Row 5~ Chain 1. Crochet 1 Half Double Crochet Decrease. Crochet 1 Half Double Crochet into the next 8 stitches. Then crochet 1 Half Double Crochet Decrease.
Row 6~ Chain 2. Crochet 1 Half Double Crochet into the next 9 stitches.
Row 7~ Chain 1. Crochet 1 Half Double Crochet Decrease. Crochet 1 Half Double Crochet into the next 6 stitches. Then crochet 1 Half Double Crochet Decrease.
Row 8~ Chain 1. Crochet 1 Half Double Crochet Decrease. Crochet 1 Half Double Crochet into the next 4 stitches. Then crochet 1 Half Double Crochet Decrease.
Row 9~ Chain 1. Crochet 1 Half Double Crochet Decrease. Crochet 1 Half Double Crochet into the next 2 stitches. Then crochet 1 Half Double Crochet Decrease.
Fasten off, and weave in loose ends.

Left Ear-Flap
Start of by attaching your bulky yarn to the 43rd stitch of Round 21.
Right across from where the right ear-flap is.
Row 1-9~ Repeat entire Right Ear-Flap pattern.


~ Border ~

Taking your 5.00mm crochet hook and DK white yarn, start of by making a Slip Knot, then attach your yarn to the back of the hat, right in the middle.
Then Single Crochet all along the edge of your hat. Slip Stitch into the first single crochet.
Fasten off, and weave in loose ends.


 ~ Braided Tassels ~

Taking your chocolate brown yarn cut 21 strands of yarn, each 65 inches long. Then make a simple knot into the bottom of the left ear-flap. Make a loose braid as short or long as you like, (Mine was 15 inches) then tie a knot at the end, and cut of any excess yarn.
Repeat for the right ear-flap.


~ Eyes ~

Round 1~ Taking your 5.00mm crochet hook and snow white DK yarn, start of by making a Slip Knot, then crochet 3 Chains. Crochet 7 Half Double Crochets into the first chain you made. Slip Stitch into the top of chain 3. You should have 8 half double crochets now.
Round 2~ Chain 2, then crochet a Half Double Crochet into the same stitch. Crochet 2 Half Double Crochets into every stitch all around. Slip Stitch into the top of chain 2. You should have 16 half double crochets now. 
Round 3~ Chain 2, then crochet a Half Double Crochet into the same stitch. *Crochet 1 Half Double Crochet into the next stitch. Then crochet 2 Half Double Crochets in the next stitch.  Repeat from the * all around. Slip Stitch into the top of chain 2. You should have 24 half double crochets now.
Round 4~ Change yarn colour to ash grey. Chain 1, then crochet 1 Single Crochet into every stitch all around. Slip Stitch into the top of chain 1.
Fasten off, and weave in loose ends.
Repeat eye pattern once more to make a pair.
Taking your tapestry needle, sew both eyes onto the front of your hat, making sure they're evenly spaced out. Then sew one black button in the center of each eye.
Eyebrows
Taking your 4.00mm crochet hook and DK chocolate brown yarn, start of by making a Slip Knot, then crochet 15 Chains.
Row 1~ Crochet 1 Slip Stitch into the third chain from your hook. Crochet 1 Slip Stitch into the next 12 chains. 
Fasten off, and weave in loose ends.
Repeat eyebrow pattern once more to make a pair.
Taking your tapestry needle, sew both eyebrows onto the front of your hat, one above each eye.


~ Buck Tooth ~

Row 1~ Taking your 5.00mm crochet hook and snow white yarn, attach your yarn to the front of the hat, in the bottom of 1 stitch {Note: The bottom of round 21.} Crochet 1 Single Crochet into the next 8 stitches across. Turn your work.
Row 2 - 4~ Chain 1. Crochet 1 Single Crochet into the next 7 stitches.
Fasten off, and weave in loose ends.
Taking your tapestry needle and some black yarn, stitch a big smile onto your hat, across the top of the buck tooth.


~ Carrot Nose ~

Round 1~ Taking your 4.00mm crochet hook and burnt orange DK yarn, start of by making a Slip Knot, then crochet 2 Chains. Crochet 5 Single Crochets into the first chain you made. Slip Stitch into the top of chain 2. You should have 6 single crochets now.
Round 2Chain 1. Crochet 1 Single Crochet into every stitch all around. Slip Stitch into the top of chain 1.  
Round 3~ Chain 1, then crochet a Single Crochet into the same stitch. Crochet 2 Single Crochets into every stitch all around. Slip Stitch into the top of chain 1. You should have 12 single crochets now.
Round 4 - 6~ Repeat round 2.
Round 7~ Chain 1, then crochet 1 Single Crochet into the same stitch. *Crochet 1 Single Crochet into the next stitch. Then crochet 2 Single Crochets in the next stitch.  Repeat from the * all around. Slip Stitch into the top of chain 1. You should have 18 single crochets now.
Round 8 - 10~ Repeat round 2. 
Round 11~ Chain 1, then crochet 1 Single Crochet into the same stitch. *Crochet 1 Single Crochet into the next 2 stitches. Then crochet 2 Single Crochets in the next stitch.  Repeat from the * all around. Slip Stitch into the top of chain 1. You should have 24 single crochets now.
Round 12 - 14~ Repeat round 2. 
Round 15~ Chain 1, then crochet 1 Single Crochet Decrease. *Crochet 1 Single Crochet into the next 2 stitches. Then crochet 1 Single Crochet Decrease.  Repeat from the * all around. Slip Stitch into the top of chain 1. You should have 18 half double crochets now.
Round 16~ Repeat round 2.
Fasten off, and weave in loose ends.
Once you've stuffed your carrot nose with toy stuffing, take your tapestry needle and sew your nose onto your hat, right beneath the eyes.


~ Twigs/Hair ~

Small Twig
Taking your 4.00mm crochet hook and DK chocolate brown yarn, start of by making a Slip Knot, then crochet 13 Chains.
Row 1~ Crochet 1 Slip Stitch into the third chain from your hook. Crochet 1 Slip Stitch into the next 10 chains.
Fasten off, and weave in loose ends.
Repeat small twig pattern once more to make a pair.
Large Twig
Taking your 4.00mm crochet hook and DK chocolate brown yarn, start of by making a Slip Knot, then crochet 17 Chains.
Row 1~ Crochet 1 Slip Stitch into the third chain from your hook. Crochet 1 Slip Stitch into the next 14 chains.
Fasten off, and weave in loose ends. {Note: If your large twig is flopping over, you can insert a piece of thin wire inside it, to keep it stable.}
Taking your tapestry needle, sew all three twigs to the very top of your hat.
