24/7 Cotton Yarn Giveaway

You might remember that last week I shared my newest design, "The Honey Bird Triangle Scarf/Shawl", a modern take on a timeless classic.
It is a beautifully versatile piece, that can be worn many different ways, whether draped over the shoulders as a shawl or wrapped around the neck for extra warmth. It goes without saying, this bohemian scarf is sure to keep you toasty on all those blustery days.

I've especially enjoyed hearing how many of you admired the design so much that you immediately started crocheting your own!

Due to all this love and creativity, I’ve partnered with Lion Brand Yarn to give YOU the chance to win the 6 skeins of 24/7 Cotton needed to crochet your very own Honey Bird Scarf/Shawl!

Not only is this yarn 100% mercerized cotton (making it incredibly soft and easy to work with), but it also comes in more than 20 different colours to choose from, making this is a great opportunity to get your hands on some!

This giveaway is open to the US and Canada.
Good luck everyone, the giveaway closes Tuesday March 28th at 12:00am AEST.
Thank you to Lion Brand Yarn for sponsoring this giveaway!

Spring "I Like Crochet" Features!

Back in my school days, as winter neared it's end, I used to long for those first few buds of spring to bloom.
Every chance I got, I would be outdoors, soaking up the fresh new smells that this warm season had to offer. Weekends consisted of numerous trips to my local carnival where I would happily spend an entire day surround by little lambs and fluffy bunnies in the petting zoo.

As I type this, I Like Crochet is currently being overrun by all things spring, floral and Easter related thanks to the release of their latest issue (available on iPad and Desktop for those of you that don't know), which has me in a tizzy of excitement.

From delicate fairy tale inspired shawls to quirky blasts from the past, this issue has everything so be sure to hop on over if you're in search of your next crochet project!

  • Mystical Meadow Shawl (pictured above) -  Crochet has been popping up in almost every store this spring, quickly making it become a real dominating style factor. Bohemian dresses, lightweight tops and tasseled scarves are only some of the ways that crochet is being incorporated into our modern wardrobes. So when I got the opportunity to design a shawl for I Like Crochet I knew that I wanted to create an accessory that exuded my love of all things floral and whimsical, whilst still remaining stylish. Sirdar's Cotton DK was the perfect fit for this delicate shawl (Fun Fact: which can also be worn as a triangle scarf), as not only did the yarn glide over my hook, but the slight sheen added another element to the finished design.

    • Spring Lavender Headband (pictured above) - Lightweight accessories are such a fun way to add some quirkiness to a simple outfit, don’t you think? I especially loved incorporating tiny puff flowers in this design, as that is exactly what makes it ooze with fond memories of spring picnics!
    • Too Cool For Stitch School - Flower Puff Stitch (pictured below) - If you have followed me along here on my blog for some time now, you'll have realised that stitch tutorials are totally my thing! I don't even need an excuse to dig out the yarn and hooks, as learning something new on a regular basis is pretty high on my list of "Things To Do"... Since the day I started work on this Flower Puff Stitch tutorial I've found it incredibly hard to keep under wraps, as it's quickly becoming one of my favourites of all time. Coupled with this pretty shade of Debbie Bliss Eco Baby, I think it's fair to say that this stitch screams "Spring!" from top to bottom.

      This Month's Features...
      • Easter is fast approaching, so be sure to have a bunny of a time with these 27+ Spring inspired crochet patterns!
      • With fast-paced egg hunts and fluffy bunnies to snuggle, it's no wonder that Easter time is a favourite among children. If your little girl is in need of an adorable outfit for a party this Spring, why not crochet her a sweet Bubble Gum Bows Top? (pictured below)
      •  The forest is one of those places for me, that feels like a home away from home. Wind weaving it's way through the trees, and birds gently chirping from every hidden nest create a beautifully peaceful sanctuary. If you too are a free spirit, spread your wings in this whimsical and serene Flyaway Feather Vest. (pictured below)

Furls Heirloom Wooden Crochet Hook Giveaway!

      $

      0

Our creative friends at Furls are ready for National Crochet Month with lots of lovely new goodies to compliment their already popular original hooks!

A few weeks ago, the people behind Furls were lovely enough to ask if they could send me my very own "Heirloom Wooden Crochet Hook", in whichever size and wood I fancied. Jumping at the opportunity, I asked if I could try a 5mm hook as I frequently tend to use this size for crocheting hats and a variety of other pretty projects.

When my delicately handcrafted hook came in the mail, I was in awe of its beauty as it quite literally took my breath away. Never before had I held a crochet hook like this, a masterpiece in it's own right. The beautiful tear-trop design was so unique and elegant, that I couldn't resist immediately taking my new crochet hook for a spin and jotting down my thoughts!

Every Furls hook is lovingly crafted by an artisan, sculpting them so in a way that each hook sits perfectly in your hand, resulting in less tired wrists... A big perk for any designer like myself, who spends hours every week crocheting using repetitive motions.

These hooks do carry a larger price tag than your standard aluminium hooks, but as an artist who hopes to share my love of crochet with my children one day, I see these as beautiful heirloom pieces that can be passed on from generation to generation.

Furls hooks are truly works of art, handcrafted with so much precision, care and love. While crocheting with this hook I noticed how the smooth, lightweight design made manoeuvring the hook easy to do, perfect for when crocheting those fiddly stitches. Yarn glides effortlessly off this hook and it feels very comfortable to crochet with... Almost like an extension of my hand!
This particular hook is made of Cocobolo Wood, which as you can clearly see has a beautiful grain and lovely, warm undertones.

And here is the very exciting part... Furls are generously offering to give away one of their Alpha Series hooks, in your choice of size! If you'd like the chance to win, just enter using the Rafflecopter widget below!

If you have been wanting to try out one of their hooks or yarn bowls for some time now, you're in luck as Furls is also throwing a fun sale to celebrate "National Crochet Month"!

No purchase necessary. Open worldwide. One winner will receive one Alpha Series hook, excluding limited editions, in their choice of size, by mail.
Giveaway valid March 24, 2017 through March 31, 2017 at 11:59pm CST. Winner will be chosen by random on April 01, 2017. Winner will be announced on this contest and by email.

As a tiny tot, cultivating my newly planted strawberry patch never ceased to make me giddy with excitement. Every other day I watched in awe has the tiny red clusters started to appear, waiting (rather impatiently) for the juicy fruits to ripen... This impatience may have led to me consuming my fair share of "green-ish" strawberries.

Spring at this very moment is in full bloom, which is always accompanied by one of my favourite times of year; strawberry season!

The Strawberry Stitch has such a quirky and whimsical texture to it. From the very first day I was introduced to the magical world of the Wizard of Oz, Dorothy's ruby red slippers were a point of fascination. Being only a tiny tot the first time I ever saw the movie, I loved watching her vibrant heels click along the yellow brick road as she went on her way.

Learning how to crochet complicated, and intricate stitches is always a fun and exciting experience for me, but some days I just feel like curling up under a cosy blanket, binge watching Downton Abbey and crocheting up a simple pattern, using an equally simple to follow stitch. Summer Fun "I Like Crochet" Features + Review!

      $

      0

Weekend getaways during the summer months is one of my favourite things about the warmer weather. Getting away from the hustle and bustle for just a few days to enjoy the sun on your skin and sand between your toes can really help to relax you, leaving you fresh and rejuvenated to get back to work (and those time-consuming crochet projects)!

Bright summer days are just ahead of us, so pack away those thick, chunky wools, and find those bold, vibrant skeins of cotton yarn that have gotten lost at the back of your stash this past winter.
Now that you have your hook and yarn out, still somewhat lost about which crochet project to take with you on your summer holiday? You're in luck, as the creative minds behind I Like Crochet have gathered together a whooping 30+ pattern collection (available on iPad and Desktop for those of you that don't know), all inspired by everything we love about summertime... This latest issue is a pretty big deal for me too, as SEVEN of my designs were featured! I'll go into detail about every design below for those of you interested to see what I've been working on recently.

From airy, intricate tops to seriously cute baby patterns (such as the Captain Cutie Boat Shoes), this issue is sure to have you in a tizzy of excitement and creativity!

+ "SOMETHING BLUE" WRAP (Pattern HERE)
This delightfully delicate wrap would make a wonderful accessory for any summer bride!.. But you don’t have to be walking down the aisle to flaunt this whimsical wrap, as it would make a beautiful addition to any wardrobe!
For this design I used Cascade's Ultra Pima Fine and DK in these gorgeous periwinkle shades. This cotton yarn was so smooth and soft to work with, that it just glided over my hook, helping me to whip up this wrap in no time at all...

+ SUMMER ROMANCE HEADBAND (Pattern HERE)
Warmer weather, fragrant flowers and summer wedding invitations; Love is definitely in the air! The Summer Romance Headband adds a touch of whimsical charm to any feminine outfit, but especially that of a bride or flower girl! (did I mention, this headband comes in multiple sizes?) Designing this delightfully feminine headband was so much fun, but it's even more fun to finally be able to share it with you all!

Cascade's Ultra Pima DK came out once again for this design, as the soft hues of this yarn works perfectly for any delicate or lacy design, whilst the cotton is perfect to work with on those hot summer days!.. Did I mention you could whip up this headband in a day, ideal for any of you that also have an increasingly busy schedule.

+ PEACH BLISS CARDI (Pattern HERE)
During summer as the sun slowly sets in the distance and dusk appears, the cooler weather unfortunately does creep in. At these moments, having a pretty lightweight cardigan on hand would not only be practical, but also enjoyable to wear!
There was a lot of trial and error involved in this design (and maybe a few tears), but I'm so pleased by end result, as the effortless combination of the 3/4 sleeves and shell stitch design (along with those adorable wooden buttons) is exactly what a summer cardigan embodies to me!

An old favourite of mine had to be used for this fun design, which is why I decided upon We Are Knitters The Pima Cotton. I know I've gushed about this particular yarn plenty of times in the past, but I can't help not to as the yarn is some of the softest cotton I've ever worked with, and the stitch definition is remarkable (as you can quite clearly see in the design above). With 20+ colours to choose from, it was nearly impossible to pick a shade, but once I spotted the Light Salmon shade, there was no going back!.. There's no doubt in my mind that this shades oozes with everything I love about summer!

+ SWEET PEA BUNTING (Pattern HERE)
Want to spruce up that dull corner of your home with some vibrant colours?.. A bunting is the perfect way to do it! Get prepared for those warm, garden picnics and summer parties with the darling Sweet Pea Bunting, a fun project for the weekend.

Inspired by the vibrancy of Schoeller und Stahl's Record 210 yarns, it wasn't long before I was excitedly crocheting up these triangles, making sure each one featured a playful, colourful flower in the centre!

+ ENDLESS SUMMER RETRO CARDI (Pattern HERE)
Some outfits are too timeless to ever stop being cute, and this darling retro cardigan definitely falls in that category. Decorated with clusters of sunny flowers, and a petite Peter Pan collar, it's no wonder this cardi has quickly become one of new favourite designs!
Every little girl would look so sweet and adorable as she skips through a garden in this little vintage outfit!.. Making this cute cardigan a wonderful handmade present for any daughter/granddaughter.

The very moment I envisioned this design for the first time, I knew that Drops Paris cotton yarn would be a match made in heaven, as there's such an array of colours to choose from, helping this design to remain lightweight yet still oozing with retro charm...

+ NEW BLOOMS BABY SANDALS (Pattern HERE)
During the warmer months, there's nothing more enjoyable than adding a fun pop of summer colour to bub's wardrobe in the form these adorable flower-motif sandals! With a snug but comfy fit, those tiny tootsies will be looking extra cute and ready for baby's first trip to the park and first picnic...

When crocheting baby sandals and booties I always try to stick with soft cotton yarns, so that these tiny accessories always remain enjoyable and comfortable for any little one to wear. For this design, I decided to stick with an old fav of mine, Drops Muskat! Don't those colours just remind you of a banana spilt?

+ SECRET WATERFALL SHAWL (Pattern HERE)
One evening, while enjoying a peaceful stroll along the beach, I was inspired by the crashing waves to design the Secret Waterfall Shawl (easily also worn as a scarf)... We all know that summer days are filled with sunshine and warmth, but as dusk sets in so does a slight chill... During these moments having a lightweight shawl/scarf to wrap around you would not only be a practical solution, but also an enjoyable accessory to wear!

Just like the Peach Bliss Cardi, this design required great stitch definition to really show of the intricate waves crocheted throughout, which is why I chose to use We Are Knitters The Pima Cotton again. After playing around with this particular yarn, I knew that the smoothness of the cotton, and quality of the yarn would lend itself to creating some gorgeous tassels. I quickly added some to the finished shawl, which turned this delicate design into a true bohemian accessory!

      • Sunshine, sand and ice cream; Summer is finally here! Time to pull out those light cotton yarns, in a selection of bold and bright colours and start crocheting... Not sure what to make? Luckily for you, the latest issue is overflowing with 30+ patterns to kick of summer!
      • Lazy summer days at the beach are what summer is made of!.. Relaxing weekends are there for crochet, but unfortunately crocheting in summer can be tricky, as the very thought of breaking out yarn on a sweltering day can seem unbearable. But why give up one of your favourite passions for the next three months, when you can just swap over to lighter weight yarn and patterns?... Inspired by trendy street wear, the Deep Waters Tee (pictured below) features a lacy mesh stitch and a fun split sleeve for effortless style... The ideal project to crochet this summer!
      •  Flowing like the tides of the sea, the Ocean Air Top (pictured below) is the perfect compliment to your beach attire this summer! Throw it on over your swimsuit, paired with some chic sandals to create a free, breezy and lightweight outfit.

As I type this post away, I'm sitting looking out over the rolling green hills in front of me, with the ocean making a guest appearance in the background.
Since I can remember, nature has always been the inspiration behind all of my creativity... What motivates and inspires you?

Recently an old memory was brought to my attention. Years ago, in my childhood home, I used to always find moments to venture out in the garden and walk underneath an old,  rickety arch, consisting of trellis-work covered head to toe in spindly vines and flowers.

Of course this recollection set me on a new crochet path... I realised that creating a series of chain arches and picots not only complimented one another, but also closely resembled trellises!

The Picot Trellis Stitch is a whimsical, lacy stitch… Perfect for when crocheting those bohemian inspired market bags and lightweight shawls, as this stitch quickly works up into a lovely mesh fabric.

Learning a new crochet stitch or technique is always such fun, don't you think? Wool And The Gang: Wild Thing Rug + Yarn Giveaway

      $

Many of you have probably already heard about the Hygge trend as it has swiftly made its way to every nook and cranny of the web. If you haven't, I'll quickly try to sum it up for you... Though there are many ways to describe "Hygge", it's simply a short word to describe the Danish ritual of enjoying life’s simple pleasures. Friends, family, cosiness, chunky throws, warm glowing fireplaces; The list goes on and on.

I am a big fan of Wool And The Gang as all their yarns and projects are absolutely breath-taking thanks to their lovely colour palettes and unique textures! When they released their "Hygge" collection a couple of months ago, I was over the moon when they reached out to me once again to see if I'd be interested in trying out one of their newest kits.

When my "Wild Thing Rug" kit came in the mail, I eagerly opened the box and couldn’t wait to get started! I've never crocheted with either their chunky wool or mixtape yarns before so there was an added element of excitement to finally be able to see, touch and work with them in person for the very first time.

I chose the "Ivory White" in the Crazy Sexy Wool and "Sahara Dust" in the Mixtape yarn, but there really was such a range of colours to mix and match. Crazy Sexy Wool has a very unique, plushy-like texture to it (making those loops extra fluffy), combined with the sturdier Mixtape yarn resulted in the perfect rug!

+ THE WILD THING RUG KIT CONTAINS
      • 5 gigantic balls of WATG's Crazy Sexy Wool (100% Peruvian Wool,  I'm sure that makes your crocheting fingers tingle in excitement just as much as mine!)
      • 5 balls of WATG's scrumptious and sturdy Mixtape Yarn (Made from upcycled t-shirt scraps; So you can crochet with a clear conscience)
      • 10mm Rosewood Crochet Hook
      • The detailed "Wild Thing Rug" crochet pattern (In the form of a cute little booklet)
      • A large sewing needle - To sew in all those pesky ends!

      + DIFFICULTY LEVEL
Intermediate (detailed sketches of steps/stitches included)

I couldn't wait to get started on my rug, as I've never attempted to crochet a rug as it's always seemed a very daunting project. It was a welcome challenge! I had assumed it would take an eternity to crochet such a large project, but I was pleasantly surprised how quickly it worked up thanks to the combination of the chunkier hook and wool/yarn.

Often I've found when working on such bulky patterns in the past how quickly it can become cumbersome and feel unnatural to crochet... The same cannot be said about this lovely design! I was very pleased with how their wool and mixtape yarn stacked up against some of my usual favourites. The wool is as soft as a marshmallow, while the mixtape yarn's stitch definition is wonderful!

Learning new crochet stitches and techniques has been an ongoing hobby of mine for a while now (don't believe me, just check out my YouTube channel), which is probably why I was drawn to the Wild Thing Rug as I've never tried my hand at incorporating loops into a crocheted design before. This technique added such a fun element to the pattern, while the loops really added a beautiful boho vibe to the finished piece!

The Wild Thing Rug is such a statement piece with its luxurious and stunning texture! The moment the loose ends were weaved in, I excitedly found the perfect place for it in my home... I can see myself spending many an hour snuggling on this rug with a good book!

I feel so accomplished that I finished this rug (despite battling off a bout of the flu) and learned some fun, new techniques along the way!

If you've never heard of Wool And The Gang, you've been missing out! Their website is overflowing with beautiful yarns and modern knitting and crochet pattern kits, with each project featuring a unique and creative twist!.. I also love the fact that they have something for everyone - from the most experienced crocheters to absolute beginners.

There really were so many great kits to choose from!.. Some of my other favourites included the Stuck On You Shawl and the Carrie On Tote... In saying that, I might just have to crochet the Copacabana Espadrilles next time!

If you have been wanting to try out one of Wool And The Gang's kits or balls of yarn for some while, I have some exciting news for you... They've provided my readers with a special code "HOPEFULHONEY15” to get 15% off your order! (This discount is only valid till the 20th of May)
