Top 5 Yarns and Wools of 2016 + Winter Pattern Sale

$

One of the questions I get asked on a regular basis is "What are some yarns you'd recommend?", which is a pretty tough question to answer as there is literally dozens of brands, yarns and fibres I enjoy crocheting with.
However, I thought I should at least compile a list of the five yarns/wools that I had the pleasure of working with for the first time this past year, that have now become some of my favourites and will be featured readily in upcoming designs!

During 2016 I received multiple amazing opportunities to work with some great companies (LoveCrochet, We Are Knitters, Wool And The Gang, Lion Brand Yarns, Sirdar and I Like Crochet just to name a few...), and with these opportunities came bundles of yarn, delivered promptly to my front door.
A majority of these yarns I became obsessed with in no time at all, and was lucky enough to be able to offer them to you all via a ton of giveaways!

So, I guess it's about time to start this fantastic list of yarns, along with some of the reasons I loved working with them... But before I go ahead, I just wanted to say that I have not been paid in any way to promote these yarns, this is my own personal opinion on these yarns that I wanted to share with fellow yarn lovers around the world!

(On that note, thank you for all the support this past year, I wouldn't have had these incredible experiences to work with companies from all around the world if it wasn't for my wonderful and creative crochet family!)

  • "The Cotton Wool by We Are Knitters (pictured above)" - Whenever I hear the word 'cotton' I immediately get excited, as it is probably my favourite type of yarn to work. The day I discovered The Cotton Wool I was head over heels in love with the unique colours available, and the softness of the cotton, due to it being made from 100% pima cotton from Peru! I currently have 2 designs in the work featuring this lovely yarn... Can you guess what I'm making?

  • "Cascade Ultra Pima by Cascade Yarns (pictured above)" - If you've ever worked with pima cotton, you'll fully understand why I've become infatuated with the yarn you see above. Cascade has somehow managed to perfect the art of creating extremely smooth and soft yarn, whilst still making over 60+ different and stunning colours available, perfect for when you need a variety of colours for a larger project! Honestly, I think this yarn would also turn into a beautiful and luxourious Sky Scarf (for those of you that don’t know, a Sky Scarf is when you crochet 2 rows every day to represent the sky color of that day)!.. Maybe a project to consider working on in 2017?

  • "Sirdar Cotton Rich Aran by Sirdar (pictured above)" - If you’ve never tried this particular yarn before, you would not believe how beautiful the colours are in person, and how stunning the stitch definition is! Definitely a new favourite yarn of mine!.. Last year I worked on a stitch tutorial for the Picot Single Crochet, and now I'm excited to use it again and again in 2017.

"LB Collection Cashmere Wool by Lion Brand Yarns (pictured above)" - Some time last year, Lion Brand was generous enough to send me a ginormous box, stuffed to the brim with delicious yarns and wools! Amongst this bundle was a couple of skeins from their LB Collection, the Cashmere Yarn, and I can easily say that I’ve never worked with such soft wool before! This wool is made from 100% cashmere (thus, the impeccable softness), which was a perfect fit for a pair of Avocado Baby Booties I had wanted to crochet for some time.

"Lion Brand Wools... in general (pictured above)" - As I just mentioned above, Lion Brand Yarns sent me a ton (and I mean, a ton) of wools this past year, and I instantly fell in love with their beautiful colours inspired by the hues you find in nature, and the lovely texture their wools have in general! Some of the wools I've happily worked with so far is their Wool Ease Thick & Quick that I used for my Toffee Apple Pompom Beanie and my Coastal Fog Cardigan (pictured below), Lion's Pride Woolspun Yarn which helped me design the Spiced Pear Beanie (coming soon), and last but not least their LB Collection Baby Alpaca Yarn that I used when crocheting this darling pair of Swiss Coffee Baby Booties (also pictured below)... To sum it all up, I've loved discovering their wide selection of wools these past few months!

Now that you have a whole new collection of yarns to sample, you'll need some patterns to use them with... After all, Winter is now in full swing, and with Winter comes frosty weather and the need to bundle up in an attempt to stay warm.
With the new year having just arrived, there's no better time to start working on some of those projects you've been putting off for some time now, or to start looking for a new project to make something for yourself after you've probably spent December crocheting gifts for all those loved ones!.. In saying that, I thought there would be no better time to share a 40% discount for my Etsy Shop

Valentines Day "I Like Crochet" Features!

After having taken a couple of weeks off over Christmas and New Year to spend time with family and friends, it's wonderful to be back, doing the thing I love...

About a week ago, I was about to buckle down  to start working on some fresh new designs and stitch tutorials for 2017, I excitedly noticed that the latest issue of I Like Crochet is now available (on iPad and Desktop for those of you that don't know), the best start to a new, and creative year!

This issue oozes with 28+ whimsical and floral patterns, from pastel scarves and shawls to help keep you warm on those chilly afternoon strolls through the park, to adorably themed Valentines Day projects!

  • Moroccan Tile Poncho (pictured above) -  Ponchos have become such an iconic part of fashion that you can go almost anywhere and find dozens of ponchos in varying textures, colors and designs… Which is one of the dozens of reasons I couldn’t resist designing this poncho, with its unique Moroccan Tile design and chunky tassels for the latest issue of I Like CrochetWhen you hear the word "Winter" things like Christmas, icicles, sled rides and snowflakes instantly come to mind, so when I discovered Debbie Bliss's Rialto Chunky in these whimsical shades of blue and beige I knew I had a match made in heaven...

  • In Bloom Triangle Scarf/Shawl (pictured above) - My In Bloom Triangle Scarf was also added to this amazing collection of crochet patterns! Not only does this poncho ooze with a bohemian charm (due to it's intricate design), but is also provides the ideal layering accessory that's both warm and stylish. The yarn I used for this floral scarf was Drop's Paris (my oldest and dearest friend in the yarn department), which not only comes in an assortment of colours, but it's also just a great cotton to work with in general!..

  • Sugar & Spice Sundress (pictured above) - The perfect way to start thinking about Spring (which is just on the horizon) is with a darling and incredibly feminine sundress. Every little girl would look so sweet and adorable as she enjoys the sunshine in this little outfit, don't you agree?.. I resorted back to an old favourite of mine for this design (Drops Safran), as I was looking for some lightweight cotton yarn, in delicate shades of pink.

  • Cabled Leg Warmers (pictured above) -  You might be surprised to learn, but you can actually crochet the cable stitch! Not only can you create a beautifully textured pair of leg warmers (that would be a great accessory to wear on those cool afternoon walks), but also learn a new crochet technique, the cable stitch, in the process!.. I love all of Debbie Bliss's yarns, so it should come as no big surprise that I used their Cashmerino Aran for this pair of leg warmers, as I was on the hunt for that perfect, soft shade of pink (which luckily for me, they had!).

  • Tasseled Boho Scarf (pictured above) - As the weather gradually starts to turns warmer as we head into spring, this tasseled scarf is the perfect way to stay nice and cosy on those chillier afternoons. Plus, it’s perfect for adding a touch of bohemian charm to whatever outfit it’s paired with! The yarn I used for this cuddly scarf is the incredibly soft Rooster Almerino Aran, which comes in the most beautiful and and naturally toned shades...

This Month's Features...
  • Enjoy the lovey dovey season this year with 28+ whimsical and floral patterns!
  • Just because it's cold outside doesn't mean you can't still add some glamour to your outfit, such as with an elegant Blossom Cowl.  (pictured above).
  •  Add a touch of quirkiness to your sofa with a floral Winter Gerbera Daisy Pillow, crocheted in neutral colours... After all, aren't neutrals the truest form of understated elegance? (pictured above)

From the day I received this bundle of chunky Debbie Bliss wool from KnittingFever, I was itching to put it to good use with one of my larger wooden crochet hooks.

Since I can remember, "mint" has always been a favourite colour of mine, and funnily enough, I've never crocheted myself a wooly mint scarf before!.. Now that it's completed, I don't know why I never have in the past, as it adds such a whimsical and pretty touch to an outfit! Mint always makes me think of the cooler months of the year, what about you?

For all the chunky scarf enthusiasts out there, it's your lucky day as I've just added the pattern for this design to my Craftsy and Etsy Shop!

Marshmallow Infinity Scarf - Free Crochet Pattern

Oversized scarves are such a popular trend right now, as they always add such a luxurious touch to any outfit, especially when they're in sophisticated neutrals, resulting in timeless pieces to be added to your wardrobe... This happens to be the very reason why I was delighted when "We Are Knitters" reached out to me to see if I might be interested in designing a fun and chic crochet pattern using their chunky wool!

I jumped at the opportunity as I've been a massive fan of their yarns and wools since months ago when I crocheted up their Samasana Blanket, a extra soft and cosy blanket to snuggle underneath thanks to their gigantic balls of lush wool!

For this Marshmallow Infinity Scarf I knew that their chunky 100% Peruvian Wool would be the perfect fit, as it comes straight from the Peruvian Andes and is very soft to the touch (just like a plushy marshmallow).
They had over 35 shades for me to choose from, making the colour selection all the more fun yet also tricky. In the end I landed upon this gorgeous hue, "Pearl Grey", which I felt closely resembled all those marshmallows I ate as little girl!

Here is a close-up of “The Wool”! Doesn’t that texture look like the most perfect thing to snuggle in this Winter?
Now that I had a basket full of some of the most beautiful wool known to crocheters, it was time to search for the perfect stitch to use for this design. Crochet has always been my forte (unlike knitting), so when I recently discovered the "Crunch Stitch" I knew it would be a match made in heaven. This stitch has one of the loveliest textures I've seen in a while, that I happily found closely resembles the purl stitch in knitting!

I used my 20mm crochet hook for this infinity scarf, which not only gave the scarf an airy and lovely flexible feel, but because I used a jumbo hook with such chunky yarn the scarf itself worked up in not time at all!

I've really loved working together with the creative team over at “We Are Knitters” on this fun design!.. Don’t forget that you can use my code “HONEY4WAK” to get 20% off your orders (good until the start of March)... And guess what, they are now shipping to Australia too! *claps hands excitedly*

If you haven't heard of them yet your home might just be under a rock, as their beautiful site is overflowing with trendy crochet and knitting patterns, lovely soft yarns and great beginner tutorials! I also love the fact that they have something for everyone - from the most experienced crocheters to absolute beginners... Be sure to pop on over to there lovely Instagram and say "Hi"!

Cocoa Baby Ankle Booties - Free Crochet Pattern

With the autumn months upon us, the weather has been so glorious this past week, that I’ve been leaving my desk at every available opportunity, making the most of these last few weeks of warmth before the cold sets in.

Whenever I think of autumn, cosy nights by the fireplace instantly come to mind. There's nothing I love more than snuggling underneath a fluffy blanket, with a mug of hot cocoa keeping my icy fingers nice and toasty, and crochet project laying readily by my side.

Is there anything quite as nostalgic as the smell of hot cocoa? The smell takes me back to when I was just a little girl and my mum would make my brother and myself each a warm mug, filled to the brim, as we enjoyed a snuggly evening in the fort we had just built from a mountain of blankets and pillows.

Hot cocoa is as much a part of every childhood is, as playing in a sandbox or flying a kite. Recently I was feeling a bit sentimental and decided to whip up a quirky pair of ankle baby booties, inspired by the warm tones on display every autumn.
I happened to have some Sirdar Cotton DK in my stash, which was the perfect fit for this little project... Not too chunky, and the skeins came in the most beautiful neutral shades!

If you have a little pair of tootsies that need to be kept warm, make sure to crochet an adorable pair of Cashmere Avocado Booties or a darling set of Autumn Blaze Booties!

With a few flicks through Pinterest it's plain to see that woven art has quickly become a new trend. Personally, I've not the most experienced weaver, but that wasn't going to stop me from jumping on board the bandwagon and experimenting with my handy crochet hook and a ball of cotton yarn.

After fumbling around for a bit, I suddenly realised that you could easily create an interesting pattern that looks somewhat woven, all just by alternating single crochets in the back and front loops of your work!

The Back & Front Loop Single Crochet Stitch has one of the most pleasant textures I've seen in a while, whilst still remaining a pretty easy crochet stitch to learn, perfect for any crochet newbies to give a go... Just imagine all the lovely (yet simple) cosy blankets and chunky oversized scarves you could crochet using this stitch!

Over the summer I longed for the days of cooler weather, where I could fully enjoy the comfort that crocheting with a sturdy wooden hook and a ball of yarn always brings me.
So as I wave bye-bye to warm, sunny trips to the beach, I welcome the cooler weather with open arms and a jolly "Hello Autumn"!

Every year I enjoy pulling out my stash of warm, golden yarns and wools, and this time around it was no different. Browsing through a couple dozen skeins always brings me an unlimited amount of inspiration, what about you?
